Physical Exams for Men & Athletes
Annual physical exams are a vital part of preventing illnesses and helping you live a long and healthy life. At Carondelet Medical Group, we offer men’s health exams and physical assessments that are designed to treat and prevent health problems. These exams and physicals are truly the first line of defense for our male patients.
While sports and school physicals are common for athletes and youth, annual physical examinations, including laboratory tests and blood work, become even more important as you get older. Schedule your male physical exam with us to make sure you are in your best health, or learn what you need to do to start heading in that direction.
Thorough Physical Assessments for Men
As discussed above, your health is the biggest reason to schedule your physical exam. When you come into our clinic, our primary care physician will sit down and discuss your health history with you, including asking you about your lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, sexual health, diet, and exercise routines. This is also when we will check on your vaccination status and update your personal and family medical history.
The next step in your physical exam is to check on your vital signs, including your blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. We follow this with exams of your heart, lungs, general appearance, head, neck, and abdominal area as well as neurological and dermatological examinations. Men’s health exams also include a handful of additional assessments, including:
- Testicular Exam – This is an exam to check each testicle for lumps, tenderness, or changes in size. It allows us to ensure there are no signs of testicular cancer.
- Hernia Exam – This exam checks for any weaknesses in the abdominal wall between the intestines and the scrotum.
- Prostate Exam – This exam allows our physician to check the size of the prostate as well as any suspicious areas.
- Penis Exam – This exam is used when there is a sign of a sexually transmitted infection, including warts or ulcers.
Why You Need School & Sports Male Physicals
These exams are important for keeping students and athletes safe. In the case of a sports physical exam, our physicians are able to determine the health of your school-aged athlete before he or she begins participating a particular sport. While it is rare that any student or athlete has a condition that might make it necessary to limit their activity, the results can be devastating for the unlucky few who participate in physical activities when they are not medically cleared to do so.
